Unfortunately, as popularized by some recent moralists, the republican tradition has developed the reputation as a fingerwagging and victim-blaming creed, but this is a distortion of the republican tradition embraced here.

If an analysis of local circumstances can reasonably forecast that a big box retailer will do more to alleviate poverty than its alternatives, then advocates of freedom probably should set aside their other reservations and support it. As these and other reflections show, advancing a slate of goods by which freedom can be coordinated doesn’t automatically resolve the contests between competing freedoms. However, it does provide additional criteria lacking in the liberal definition.
