She was studying psychology at Rio University at the time and had just left home. She used to visit the Centro Cultural which stands opposite Candelária Church. It was a beautiful public space which took you through a high arch of belle époque wrought iron gates into a circle of cool marble. There people sat on curved steps under a high galleried dome. Exhibitions were held there, delicate drawings graced the walls. Browsers in the art bookshop lifted books from the shelves and carefully turned the vibrant pages.
It did not take them long to realise that Praça Mauá was a much rougher location. Rogeirinho’s group was more threatening than the Candelária group. Its members occasionally used knives made of shards of glass to mug their victims. And it was naval territory, which meant that the group lived with the permanent threat of retaliation, not only from military police, but also from naval police. Beth found that she did not like Praça Mauá after all, but she did not want to go all the way back to Copacabana where she would be too far away from Rogeirinho.
Yvonne’s second husband was the owner of a chain of hotels. She owned a beautiful, cool, airy apartment in the Zona Sul, a weekend house in the country, and a studio where every day she scrubbed the floor clean on her hands and knees so that she could think clearly enough to work on her rounded, fluid sculptures. A couple of mornings a week her driver took her to a bakery where she picked up bread and milk, and he waited patiently in the car while she held her ‘street school’ on the Candelária Church forecourt.
