This percentage increase is even more true of younger juveniles who are 15 or younger (61%) than with juvenile offenders who are 16 or older (54%). What is to be learned from this trend and from the current practice of placing juveniles on probation? One implication is that probation appears to be a common practice that is accepted by the courts, juvenile justice staff, and, in general, the public. Yet very little evidence suggests that such a practice is effective in curbing further juvenile crime or helping youth live more productive lives.

For instance, group intervention with low supervision has been found to lead to a higher level of deviance training and further behavioral problems. In the most highly controlled field experiment of 400 youth matched on demographic, behavioral, and physical factors, exposing youth to the best social work interventions of the time resulted in negative results for the youth compared to the control group of youth who were left alone (McCord, 1992). The youth who were assigned to summer camps did poorer than the control group in the three decades that followed (McCord, 1997).

In this way, we can establish a priori some of the vulnerabilities of the individual and group as a whole. Previous reports of these data have examined some of these variables, including intervention outcomes on recidivism (Quinn, Sutphen, Michaels, & Gale, 1994; Quinn, Bell, & Ward, 1997; Quinn, 1999; Quinn & VanDyke 2001; Quinn, VanDyke, & Kurth, 2002; and Quinn & VanDyke, 2004). The data presented here provide documentation of the effectiveness of a multiple family group intervention for reducing delinquency of first-offender youth.
