For example, should ‘empowerment’ necessarily be a goal, even if you are aiming to challenge an aspect of men’s privileges? What are the practical results of policies? What actual initiatives get funded or supported? What do they set out to do? What are their aims, either stated or unstated? What are the outcomes for girls and women as well as for boys and men? How do clients and workers of both sexes experience interventions? What differences, if any, do they make to their lives? Do they ‘work’, either in the terms in which they set out to be effective or in terms of some unintended knock-on effect?
Thus, the cognition that a man should achieve no matter what, can be countered by realistic thoughts about other sides of life. The cognition that emotions are ‘sissy’ can be countered with the alternative view that sharing feelings helps maintain close relationships that give great joy and significance to life. This alternative can be tried out as an experiment to see if it does lead to negative or positive consequences. In many ways, cognitive techniques are more often integrated into other intervention approaches.
