This proliferation has in turn led to changes in our culture. Our laws now offer protection to all groups of faith and belief as opposed to solely protecting Christians. Television and radio programmes now emphasise a plurality of beliefs and no longer assume a Christian stance. Official forms, such as census documents, now allow people to declare themselves to be of no religion or to name their religious background. In the 2001 census in England and Wales 390,000 people declared themselves to be followers of the fictional Jedi religion based on the popular Star Wars films.

Firstly, men, women and culture are hopelessly intertwined. Gender is heavily influenced, possibly defined, by culture and culture is influenced by gender. Secondly, as social workers we need to develop a sophisticated analysis of gender roles and the way in which formal religion and spirituality impacts on the way we perceive gender.
