I speak five languages fluently as a result of living and learning in five different countries before I was seventeen. I have had to pick up and move all my life. My parents placed a high value on education and on meeting people from all over the world. I graduated from a ‘grande ecole’ in France, which has given me excellent credentials for working in the public sector. While I was able to have some work experience in France, it was limited due to problems I had with working papers. I hope that the situation will change once I get my MBA this year.
Global Cosmopolitans, who must grow and thrive in an environment of extreme complexity and ambiguity, develop filters that are unlike those of many of their peers at work. The critical skills that Global Cosmopolitans develop to filter their personal reality give them a creative edge of difference. Global Cosmopolitans are experts at being different. They develop the ability to look at issues from an outsider’s perspective. Their experience across cultures gives them multiple lenses and perspectives for seeing and understanding the world around them.
The starting points for a global life fall into two broad categories: family choice and personal choice. The family experience sometimes begins before birth because both parents are from different countries. It might start with a global move by parents or, as in Sabine’s case, even grandparents. Families might move once or many times. As for becoming global because of personal choice, some people are attracted by educational opportunities, economic advantages or a nagging desire for adventure. Sometimes they fall in love.
